Roy Lee Snipes, III was born in San Antonio, Texas on May 23, 1945. He was the oldest of three children born to Mary Ann and Roy Lee Snipes, Jr.
Fr. Roy’s early education was at Mt. Sacred Heart School and then at MacArthur High School in San Antonio. After his secondary education, Fr. Roy attended Texas A & M where he received a B.S. in agricultural education. He taught high school science at San Isidro School District for seven years. Fr. Roy’s commitment to quality education has been demonstrated throughout his life.
In September of 1976, Fr. Roy entered the Novitiate of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Godfrey, Illinois. He studied philosophy at Our Lady of the Lake University, Incarnate Word University and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He pursued theological studies at the Oblate College of the Southwest (now Oblate School of Theology) in San Antonio. Fr. Roy was ordained to the priesthood on September 17, 1980 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission and on October 22, 1980 was named associate pastor.
On June 1, 1982, he was assigned as associate pastor of Our Lady of Refuge in Roma and later became pastor on June 20, 1983. On June 20, 1989, he was named for a second term as pastor of Our Lady of Refuge and on August 18, 1992 he returned to Our Lady of Guadalupe as pastor where he continues his ministry today.
In addition, he has also served on various committees and professional posts. He has memberships in the justice and peace committee; the Oblate Province renewal committee; the Oblate Province admissions board for novitiate service group and the canonization/pilgrimage task force. He has been superior of the Starr County Oblate District; vocation director for central and upper Valley area; and presently is superior of the Rio Grande Valley district.
He is a devoted and faithful disciple who loves the Church and God’s people. He is hospitable, friendly and open to all age groups. Fr. Roy is also known for his love of animals, especially his dogs. He is sometimes seen with his companion Augie at functions outside the parish as well as inside.
Since his arrival at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mission, Fr. Roy has shown his leadership in a variety of ways. He has enhanced the programs and organizations in the parish. He has brought people back to the faith. He has listened to the desire of the parishioners to re-open the parish school and has worked diligently to make this a reality. Fr. Roy has accomplished the dream of his parishioners and he officially re-opened Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School in a ceremony held on September 5, 2004. We are proud of Fr. Roy’s leadership and of his dedication to Catholic education.
